Here is a very unusual fossil seed fern from the famous Mazon Creek area of Illinois. This specimen was acquired from an old collection near Chicago. This 3-D Coal Age plant is wonderfully preserved in a siderite concretion - both halves of the concretion (part and counterpart) are present. This distinct specimen exhibits exquisite detail - the individual leaflets are clearly defined, and the venation of the leaflets is easily seen. The beautiful color and contrast of the fossil is totally natural - no coloring or enhancement has been added to the specimen. This is a textbook Mazon Creek Alethopteris fern from an old collection - very sought-after by collectors.
