Name:
Lepidodendron sp.
Age: Pennsylvanian
Formation: Cherokee Series
Location: Pella, Iowa
Size: Branch is 7.6 inches long
This is a detailed specimen of Lepidodendron bark from the Pennsylvanian of Iowa. Lepidodendron trees were very important in the formation of coal in the mid-continent area. The diamond-shaped pattern of the bark is very distinct. Each ''diamond'' represents the point of attachment of a fallen leaf. This specimen shows a nice, large branch, with a smaller branch displayed on the side of the plate. The detail is very finely preserved - the textbook diamond patterns are extremely well defined. This is a fabulous plate of fossil bark that displays very well.
