Lepidodendron Branches
Age: Pennsylvanian
Formation: Cherokee Series
Location: Pella, Iowa
Size: Plate is about 3.8" X 4.3"
This is an unusual specimen of Lepidodendron bark from the Pennsylvanian of Iowa. Lepidodendron trees were very important in the formation of coal in the mid-continent area. The diamond-shaped pattern of the bark is very distinct. Each "diamond" represents the point of attachment of a fallen leaf. This specimen shows a nice, large branch, with a smaller branch displayed in the middle of the plate. The detail is very fine - the textbook diamond patterns are well defined. This is a fabulous plate of fossil bark that displays beautifully.
