Here is a very interesting plate of Coal Age plants. This is Sphenophyllum sp. from the Pennsylvanian of Pennsylvania. This unusual fossil plant consisted of a slender stem bearing whorls of wedge-shaped leaves. This plant became extinct at the end of the Pennsylvanian. This plate of Sphenophyllum exhibits excellent detail. There are many whorls of leaves present on this plate. The slender stems are easily seen, and the individual, spatulate leaves are clearly defined. These fossil plants have a distinct, shiny-white coloration and contrast wonderfully with the black shale. This is a very collectible example of this unique fossil plant.
