Ocotea coloradensis
Age: Eocene
Formation: Green River
Location: Bonanza, Utah
Size: Leaf is 1.8" including petiole
Here is a very rare fossil leaf. This is Ocotea coloradensis from the Eocene of Utah. This is the first example of this leaf that we have seen. This oval leaf has an acute base and exhibits slightly undulating margins. The palmate venation of the leaf is beautifully displayed and the petiole is still tightly attached. The naturally dark leaf contrasts wonderfully with the khaki-colored matrix. It is well centered on the squared plate of shale. There is also an unidentified seed on the plate. This is a great example of this extremely scarce leaf from the Green River Shale.
