Name:
Quercus petros
Age: Eocene
Formation: Green River Formation
Location: Bonanza, Utah
Size: Leaf is 2.6 inches long
This is a very rare fossil leaf. It is a beautiful Quercus petros leaf, an Oak, from the Eocene of Utah. We have seen only a few specimens of this species from this site, and this one is easily the best. This type of leaf is somewhat teardrop-shaped in outline and has slightly dentate/undulating margins. A distinct petiole is still tightly attached to the leaf. The leaf has nice color and contrast and is well centered on the rectangular plate of shale. This is a very fine example of this extremely scarce leaf from the Green River Formation.
