Fossil Flower and Mosquito

Formation: Green River Formation
Location: Bonanza, Utah
Size: Flower is 0.3 inches tall
Now HERE is a rare fossil association. It is a Fossil Flower and Mosquito from the Green River Formation. Due to their delicate nature, flowers are very rare in the fossil record. This is a great specimen of an Eocene flower. This flower is wonderfully preserved in side view. The petiole of the flower is clearly defined, and the drooping petals are easily seen. The upright stamens are even intact and beautifully displayed, which is quite uncommon. And there is a complete mosquito fossilized just to the left of the flower - what are the chances?! The fossils have great color and contrast and are nicely presented on the natural plate of shale. This is a very exciting specimen of a rare fossil flower and insect from the Green River Formation.
