This is an excellent specimen of Acer lesquereuxi, a true Maple, from the Green River Formation of Utah. Maple leaves are highly uncommon at this site - this leaf should not be confused with the more common Sycamore leaf. All five lobes of the leaf are intact, with the center lobe being partially bug-eaten (rare). The venation is clearly defined - even the microscopic venation is beautifully preserved. A long petiole is still tightly attached to the leaf. The leaf has very nice, natural color and contrasts wonderfully with the light-colored matrix. The fossil is well presented on the squared plate of shale. This is a great example of a rare Maple leaf from Green River Formation.
