This is a very fine specimen of a cone from the ''Dawn Redwood'', Metasequoia occidentalis. This fossil is from the Oligocene Plant Deposits of Montana. The cone is complete and displays fine detail. The spirally arranged scales of the cone are easily seen. The cone is still attached to its long stalk. The specimen has great color and superb contrast and is well centered on the semi-rectangular plate of shale. This is a wonderful specimen of a Metasequoia cone.
