Here is a nicely detailed specimen of Tree Bark from the Pennsylvanian of Iowa. Ancient trees were very important in the formation of coal in the mid-continent area. The distinct pattern of the bark is very easily seen. The fossil has very nice color and is well presented on the large, natural plate of shale. This is a very nice example of fossilized Tree Bark from the Coal Age.
