This is a large specimen of Lepidodendron bark from the Pennsylvanian of Iowa. Lepidodendron trees were very important in the formation of coal in the mid-continent area. The diamond-shaped pattern of the bark is very distinct. Each ''diamond'' represents the point of attachment of a fallen leaf. This specimen is one of the most unusual examples of Lepidodendron bark that we have ever seen. The fossil is a section of a tree trunk that has been compressed on top, but retains the trunk shape, only flattened. The bark is fully intact on the back side, also. This is a very complete section of a Lepidodendron tree from the Coal Age.
