Name:
Sequoia Cones
Age: Oligocene
Formation: Muddy Creek Formation
Location: Beaverhead County, Montana
Size: Branch is 1.6 inches long
This is a very fine specimen of a Sequoia branch with cones from the Oligocene of Montana. Isn't it strange that such a large tree would have relatively small cones? This fossil cones are still tightly attached to the stalk and exhibits great detail. The ovoid cones displays spirally arranged, peltate scales. The fossil has wonderful color and contrast and is well presented on the natural plate of matrix. This is an excellent example of fossil cones from a Sequoia tree.
