Here is a very unusual leaf from the Green River Shale. It is a Persea coriacea, a member of the Laurel family. This lance-shaped leaf is quite large and exhibits fine detail. The slightly dentate margins of the leaf are beautifully displayed, and the venation is just outstanding. The tiny attenuate tip of the leaf is intact, and the complete petiole is still tightly attached to the leaf. The brown leaf contrasts wonderfully with the khaki-colored matrix. The leaf is well centered on the somewhat rectangular plate of shale that also contains an unusual fossil plant on the back side of the plate. This is an excellent Persea leaf from the Eocene of Colorado.
