Name:
Populus wilmattae
Age: Eocene
Formation: Green River Formation
Location: Bonanza, Utah
Size: Leaf is 5.5" long including petiole
This is an extremely attractive fossil leaf. It is a leaf of Populus wilmattae, a poplar, from the Green River Formation of Utah. This heart-shaped leaf has a somewhat rounded base and a very long acuminate apex which is unusually intact to the tiny, tiny tip. The venation of the leaf is quite distinct and easily seen with the naked eye. The long petiole is still tightly attached to the base of the leaf. The fossil has excellent, natural color and contrast and is almost perfectly centered on the natural-edged plate of matrix. Also, there is some insect predation in the center of the leaf, which is unusual in the fossil record. This is a very displayable specimen of a poplar leaf from the Eocene.
