Large, Rare Symphoricarpus Leaf From Utah
Stock Number  FPUXX08

Name:   Symphoricarpus sp.
Age:  Eocene
Formation:  Green River Formation
Location:  Bonanza, Utah
Size:  Leaf is 2.8 inches long

Here is an extremely rare leaf from Utah. This is Symphoricarpus sp. (Snowberry) from the Green River Formation. This is only the second example of this type of leaf that we have ever seen from this site (and almost three times larger than the first specimen!). The fossil Snowberry leaf has a very rounded shape and exhibits fine detail. The entire, slightly undulating margins of the leaf are intact. This leaf has strong primary venation and much weaker secondary and tertiary venation. Under magnification, however, the tertiary venation is easily seen forming a fine network of capillaries. The dark-colored leaf contrasts beautifully with the grayish-tan matrix. It is nicely positioned on the rounded plate of shale. This is an excellent and large example of this very scarce leaf from the Eocene.
