Name:
Fossil Fern Plate
Age: Pennsylvanian
Formation: Highwater Formation
Location: West Virginia
Size: Plate is 6.5" X 11.0"
This is a beautiful fern plate from an unusual location. It is a large slab of fossil seed ferns from West Virginia. The unusual feature of this fossil is the relief of the ferns - they are not impressions, they are very inflated and 3-D. Some ferns found in Europe display this quality, but it is rarely found in the U.S. There are three Alethopteris fronds and one Pecopteris frond preserved on the plate. They all possess fine detail and great color. The fronds are aesthetically spaced on the natural, unbroken plate of dense shale. This is a very displayable plate of two different ferns from the ''Coal Age'' of West Virginia.
