Here is an extremely attractive specimen of Metasequoia occidentalis from the Eocene of Canada. This Dawn Redwood frond exhibits superb detail. The central shoot and opposite attachment of the individual leaflets are displayed in wonderful fashion. The frond is well positioned on the natural plate of shale that also contains some long evergreen needles. The dark-colored fossils have excellent contrast with the lighter-colored matrix. This is a very nice example of Metasequoia from the Tranquille Shale.
