Name:
Platanus wyomingensis
Age: Eocene
Formation: Green River Formation
Location: Bonanza, Utah
Size: Leaf is 3.7'' long and 3.5'' wide
This is an excellent fossil leaf. It is a Platanus wyomingensis, a Sycamore, from the Eocene of Utah. This leaf is wonderfully complete - all five lobes are intact and beautifully displayed. The serrated margins of the leaf are clearly defined, and the venation of the leaf is quite distinct. The long, complete petiole is still tightly attached to the base of the leaf. The natural, dark-brown color of the leaf contrasts well with the light-colored matrix. The leaf is nicely showcased on the squared plate of shale. This is a textbook example of a Sycamore leaf from the Green River Formation.
