Name:
Quercus cuneatus
Age: Eocene
Formation: Green River
Location: Bonanza, Utah
Size: Leaf is 1.45" long including petiole.
Here is a very detailed specimen of Quercus cuneatus, an oak, from the Eocene of Utah. Oak leaves are quite uncommon from this formation. The leaf is complete and exhibits fine detail. The venation of the leaf is quite noticeable. The midvein is strong and extends to the apex. The weak secondary veins are alternate. The lobate margins of the leaf are clearly defined and a very distinct petiole is still attached to the leaf. The specimen has great color and contrast. It is well centered on a natural plate of matrix. This is a very fine example of a fossil oak leaf from the Green River Formation.
