Excellent Cone From The Lepidodendron Tree
Stock Number  FPCIA02
EXTINCTIONS Choice

Name:   Lepidostrobus sp.
Age:  Pennsylvanian
Formation:  Cherokee Series
Location:  Pella, Iowa
Size:  Cone is 3.6 inches long.

Here is a beautiful cone from the Lepidodendron tree. This is Lepidostrobus sp. from the Pennsylvanian of Iowa. The cone of this tree consisted of a central stalk crowded with spirally arranged bracts, the upper surface of each bearing a single spore case. This large cone exhibits very fine detail. The individual bracts are well displayed. The brown fossil contrasts beautifully with the grayish-tan matrix. The cone is almost perfectly centered on the large plate of sandstone. This is a wonderful fossil cone from this Pennsylvanian tree.
