Here is a gorgeous example of a fossil seed fern from the Pennsylvanian. This large specimen is from the famous Mazon Creek area of Illinois. The seed fern is preserved in a siderite concretion. Both halves (part and counterpart) of the concretion are present. The fossil plant exhibits beautiful detail. The venation of the individual leaflets is easily seen. Did we mention the color and contrast yet? It is EXCEPTIONAL. The yellowish color of the fern contrasts beautifully with the grayish-brown matrix.
