Very Nice Asterophyllites In Concretion
Stock Number  FPFMI13

Name:   Asterophyllites longifolius
Age:  Pennsylvanian
Formation:  Braidwood Formation
Location:  Johnson County, Missouri
Size:  Concretion is 3.5 inches long.

In the Pennsylvanian of Missouri, a gigantic rush-like plant named Calamites grew up to fifty feet tall. The leaves of the plant were always borne in whorls, entirely surrounding the slender branches. This specimen, Asterophyllites longifolius, is a nice example of those leaves. This species is similar to A. equisetiformis except that the leaves are twice as long. This fossil plant is preserved in a siderite concretion. Both halves of the concretion are present. The fossil exhibits fine detail - the long individual leaves are easily seen. The dark brown plant contrasts nicely with the yellowish matrix. This is a very fine specimen of Asterophyllites longifolius.
