Formation:  Graissesac
Location:  Le Tourn Mine, France
Size:  Plate is 4.7" X 6.2"

Here is an extremely interesting plate of Coal Age plants. This is Sphenophyllum sp. from the Pennsylvanian of France. This unusual fossil plant consisted of a slender stem bearing whorls of wedge-shaped leaves. This plant became extinct at the end of the Pennsylvanian. This plate of Sphenophyllum exhibits excellent detail. There are many, many whorls of leaves present on this plate. The slender stems are easily seen and the individual, spatulate leaves are clearly defined. These fossil plants have a "shimmering" white coloration and contrast wonderfully with the dark gray shale. This is a very displayable specimen of this unique fossil plant.
