Name:
Ginkgoites cf. hermelini
Age: Eocene
Formation: Tranquille Shale
Location: Cache Creek, British Columbia, Canada
Size: Leaf is 3.1" long and 3.4" across
This is a very aesthetic specimen of a highly unusual fossil leaf. This is Ginkgoites cf. hermelini from the Eocene of Canada. This extremely dissected leaf is quite large and exhibits superb detail. The dichotomous venation of this uncommon leaf is just wonderful, and the petiole is still tightly attached to the base of the leaf. The totally natural color of the leaf is outstanding, and it contrasts well with the lighter-colored matrix. It is beautifully centered on the plate of shale that also contains a partial deciduous leaf on the back side. This is a very displayable example of this rare fossil leaf from the Tranquille Shale.
