Name:
Pterocarya roanensis
Age: Eocene
Formation: Green River
Location: Near Bonanza, Utah
Size: Leaf is 3.5 inches long including petiole.
Here is an unusual leaf from the Green River Shale. This is Pterocarya roanensis, a wingnut. The lanceolate leaf displays dentate margins. The leaf has a very strong midvein with weak, alternate secondary venation. The fossil has good color and contrast. It is well centered on the semi-rectangular block of matrix. You can easily see, near the top of the leaf, where the leaf has been chewed on by an insect, prior to preservation. This is an unusual leaf that tells an interesting story.
