Name:
Platanus wyomingensis
Age: Eocene
Formation: Green River
Location: Near Bonanza, Utah
Size: Leaf is 3.5 inches long including petiole.
Here is a fossil leaf that tells a story. This is (was?) a beautiful specimen of Platanus wyomingensis, a sycamore, from the Eocene of Utah. The preservation of the leaf is superb. The venation of the leaf is well displayed. The coarsely-toothed margins are nicely exhibited. The petiole of the leaf is present. Why is one of the lobes missing? The leaf has been CHEWED ON BY AN INSECT before it was preserved in the volcanic ash. The specimen has great color and contrast. It is well centered on the squared matrix plate. This is a very intriguing specimen of a bug-eaten leaf from the Green River Formation.
