Name:
Prunus stewarti
Age: Eocene
Formation: Green River Formation
Location: Bonanza, Utah
Size: Leaf is 3.8" long including petiole
This is a very uncommon Prunus stewarti leaf from the Eocene of Utah. This oval-shaped leaf has an extremely acute base and an acuminate apex. The slightly dentate margins of the leaf are beautifully displayed all the way to the very tip. The venation of the leaf is easily seen - even the tertiary venation is well defined. A long petiole is still tightly attached to the leaf. The dark color of the leaf contrasts nicely with the lighter-colored matrix. The fossil is wonderfully centered on the plate of shale. This is a fine example of this unusual leaf from the Green River Formation.
