Celtis mccoshii (Hackberry)
Age: Eocene
Formation: Green River Formation
Location: Bonanza, Utah
Size: Leaf is 2.25" including petiole
Here is a fantastic specimen of Celtis mccoshii, a hackberry, from the Green River Formation. This lance-shaped leaf exhibits wonderful detail. The serrated margins of the leaf are quite distinct, and a thin, complete petiole is still tightly attached to the leaf. The venation of the leaf is outstanding - even the tertiary venation is beautifully displayed. The fossil has excellent, natural color and contrast and is almost perfectly centered on the rectangular block of matrix. This is an exquisite example of a fossil hackbery leaf from the Eocene of Utah.
