Here is a very interesting plant fossil. It is a winged samara from the Muddy Creek Formation of Montana. This site is well-known for Sequoia and Metasequoia fossils. Occasionally, one of these fruiting bodies is unearthed. This is possibly a samara from Pinus sp., a pine. The fossil has wonderful color and contrast and is well presented on the natural plate of matrix that also contains another plant fossil of undetermined origin. This is a fine specimen of a winged samara from the Oligocene.
