Name:
Araucaria mirabilis Cone
Age: Jurassic
Formation: "Petrified Forest"
Location: Cerro Cuadrado, Patagonia, Argentina
Size: Cone is 3.4 inches long
Here is a spectacular Araucaria mirabilis cone from the Jurassic of Patagonia. Araucaria is closely related to the modern-day monkey-puzzle tree. This large cone has been cut in half and both halves have been highly polished. The exterior of the cone exhibits the individual cone scales in wonderful fashion. And the interior of the cone is absolutely stunning. The cone has been totally replaced by silica in a multitude of wonderful colors. The stem of the cone is easily seen and the individual seeds are quite evident. The unusual burgundy coloration and the extremely fine detail of the cone make this a very collectible fossil.
Note: Argentina has now banned the export of all fossils. We will strictly abide by and enforce this law - we will not acquire new fossils from Argentina. However, this fossil was collected and exported prior to this law, and can be sold legally.
