Name:
Rhus nigricans (Sumac)
Age: Eocene
Formation: Green River
Location: Douglas Pass, Colorado
Size: Leaf is 2.3 inches long
This is an extremely nice specimen of Rhus nigricans, a sumac, from the Green River Formation of Colorado. This somewhat asymmetrical leaf has a cuneate base and the strongly serrated margins of the leaf are beautifully displayed. The very tip of the leaf is even intact. The dark brown color of the leaf is totally natural and contrasts well with the khaki-colored matrix. The leaf is well centered on the rectangular plate of shale. This is an excellent sumac leaf from the Eocene of Colorado.
