Two Excellent Lepidophyllum Leaves In Concretion
Stock Number  FPSMC01

Name:   Lepidophyllum sp.
Age:  Pennsylvanian
Formation:  Carbondale Formation
Location:  Braidwood, Illinois
Size:  Concretion is 2.3 inches long

Here is a wonderful specimen of Lepidophyllum sp. from the famous Mazon Creek area of Illinois. Lepidophyllum is a ''form genus'' for all of the leaves from the Lepidodendron tree. The so-called fertile leaves were usually short and triangular. They grew on the cones and served as sort of scale-like protections to the spore cases. There are two of these leaves beautifully preserved in this siderite concretion. Both halves of the concretion are present so both part and counterpart of the fossils are wonderfully displayed. The fossils have very nice color and contrast and are quite distinct. This is a great double specimen of Lepidophyllum leaves from the Coal Age.
