Here is a nicely detailed specimen of Lepidodendron bark from the Pennsylvanian of Iowa. Lepidodendron trees were very important in the formation of coal in the mid-continent area. The diamond-shaped pattern of the bark is very distinct. Each "diamond" represents the point of attachment of a fallen leaf. The fossil has very nice color and is well presented on the rectangular plate. The reverse side of the sandstone slab shows several partial, linear, Lepidodendron leaves. This is a very good example of Lepidodendron bark from the Coal Age.
