This is a fine specimen of a Lepidodendron branch from the Pennsylvanian of Iowa. Lepidodendron trees were very important in the formation of coal in the mid-continent area. The diamond-shaped pattern of the bark is very distinct. Each "diamond" represents the point of attachment of a fallen leaf. This specimen is a great example of a branch. The color is natural and the pattern is very detailed. There are also two smaller branches on the plate. This is a beautiful specimen of Lepidodendron from Iowa.
