Name:
Lepidodendron sp.
Age: Pennsylvanian
Formation: Cherokee Series
Location: Pella, Iowa
Size: Plate is 7.5" X 7.5"
This is an unusual specimen of Lepidodendron bark from the Pennsylvanian of Iowa. Lepidodendron trees were very important in the formation of coal in the mid-continent area. The diamond-shaped pattern of the bark is very distinct. Each "diamond" represents the point of attachment of a fallen leaf. This specimen shows a nice, large branch, with a smaller branch displayed on the side of the plate. The detail is very fine. Also, the back side of the plate has two detailed bark sections preserved. The textbook diamond patterns are well defined. This is a fabulous plate of fossil bark that displays well on both sides.
