Unusual Sphenophyllum Preserved In Concretion
Stock Number  FPFMI21

Name:   Sphenophyllum sp.
Age:  Pennsylvanian
Formation:  Braidwood Formation
Location:  Johnson County, Missouri
Size:  Concretion is almost 2" across

This is a very fine specimen of Sphenophyllum sp. from the Pennsylvanian of Missouri. This unusual fossil plant consisted of a slender stem bearing whorls of wedge-shaped leaves. This plant became extinct at the end of the Pennsylvanian. This specimen is well-preserved in a concretion. Both halves of the concretion are present so both part and counterpart of the fossil are intact. This specimen is quite large for the type and exhibits fine detail. The broadly spatulate leaves are very distinct, and even the venation of the leaves can be easily seen. The dark, natural color of the fossil contrasts well with the orangish matrix. This is a very pretty example of this uncommon Coal Age plant.
