Very Nice Stalked Sequoia Cone From Montana
Stock Number  FPCM02

Name:   Sequoia sp.
Age:  Oligocene
Formation:  Muddy Creek Formation
Location:  Beaverhead County, Montana
Size:  Cone is 0.6 inches long including stalk.

This is a very fine specimen of a Sequoia cone from the Oligocene of Montana. Isn't it strange that such a large tree would have relatively small cones? This fossil cone is still attached to the stalk and exhibits fine detail. The ovoid cone displays spirally arranged, peltate scales. The fossil has great color and contrast. It is positioned on a natural piece of matrix. Sequoia is indicative of a well-drained lowland ecosystem. This is an excellent example of a fossil Sequoia cone.
