Beautiful Long-Stalked Metasequoia Cone Centered On Matrix

Age:  Oligocene
Formation:  Muddy Creek Formation
Location:  Beaverhead County, Montana
Size:  Cone is 2.3 inches long including stalk.

This is a superb specimen of a cone from the "dawn redwood", Metasequoia occidentalis. This fossil is from the Oligocene of Montana. The cone is complete and displays fine detail. The spirally arranged scales of the cone are easily seen. The cone is still attached to the long stalk. The specimen has great color and superb contrast. It is almost perfectly centered on the natural plate of shale. This is a wonderful specimen of a Metasequoia cone.
