Name:
Araucaria mirabilis
Age: Jurassic
Formation: "Petrified Forest"
Location: Cerro Cuadrado, Patagonia, Argentina
Size: Cone is 2.7 inches long.
This is a nice cone of Araucaria from the "wilds" of Patagonia. This specimen is from the Jurassic. Araucaria was closely related to the modern-day monkey-puzzle tree. The cone has been replaced by silica. The cone has been sliced in half and both halves have been polished. The interior of the cone is very interesting. The cone shows very fine detail. The individual seeds are easily seen. This is a very displayable plant fossil from the time of the dinosaurs.
