This is a large specimen of Lepidodendron bark from the Pennsylvanian of Iowa. Lepidodendron trees were very important in the formation of coal in the mid-continent area. The diamond-shaped pattern of the bark is very distinct. Each "diamond" represents the point of attachment of a fallen leaf. This specimen is one of the most detailed examples of Lepidodendron bark that we have ever seen. The fossil has very nice color. The reverse side of the sandstone slab shows many partial, linear, Lepidodendron leaves. This is a very displayable slab of Lepidodendron bark.
