Salix cockerelli (Willow)
Age: Eocene

Location: Near Bonanza, Utah
Size: Leaf is 4.25 inches including petiole
This is a great example of Salix cockerelli from the Eocene of Utah. This is a fossil willow. The lanceolate leaf has entire margins. The leaf has a strong midvein with many secondary veins arising from it. It also has a very short petiole attached. The dark brown leaf contrasts extremely well with the light-colored matrix. The fossil is well centered on a rectangular block of shale. This is a very fine, large specimen of a fossil willow from the Green River Formation.
