Name:
Fossil Seed Fern
Age: Pennsylvanian
Formation: Carbondale Formation
Location: Braidwood, Illinois
Size: Concretion is 3.2 inches long
Here is an excellent fossil seed fern from the famous Mazon Creek area of Illinois. This plant is well preserved in a siderite concretion. Both halves of the concretion (part and counterpart) are present. This specimen exhibits excellent detail. The central "stem" is quite apparent and each individual leaflet is clearly defined. Even the venation of the individual leaflets is beautifully displayed. The incredible color and contrast of the fossil is totally natural - no paint or coloring has been added to the specimen. This is a very aesthetic seed fern from the Pennsylvanian.
