Name:
Erythrina roanensis
Age: Eocene
Formation: Green River
Location: Bonanza, Utah
Size: Leaf is 3.2" long including petiole
Here is a very unusual leaf. This is a large specimen of Erythrina roanensis from the Eocene of Utah. Very few specimens of this particular leaf have been found in the Green River Formation. This large leaf has irregular, undulating margins and extremely strong venation. The primary vein is very thick and the secondary veins are alternately arranged. The short, very stout petiole is complete and still attached to the leaf. This plant appears to have been chewed on by a bug, prior to fossilization, near the top of the leaf. The fossil has extraordinary color and contrast. It is well centered on the large, squared plate of shale. This is a great example of this unusual leaf from the Green River Shale.
