Here is a unique plant fossil. This is a Sequoia dakotensis cone from the Cretaceous of Montana. Sequoia is typically found in well-drained lowland sites, usually terraces in river valleys. This cone has been extracted from the surrounding matrix and is totally 3-dimensional in preservation. The ovoid cone has spirally arranged, peltate scales. This is a very interesting cone of a fossil Redwood.
