Here is an excellent specimen of two Sequoia cones from the Oligocene of Montana. Isn't it strange that such a large tree would have relatively small cones? These fossil cones are still tightly attached to the branch and exhibit wonderful detail. The ovoid cones display the spirally arranged, peltate scales in beautiful fashion. The fossil plant has very nice color and contrast and is almost perfectly centered on the natural, square plate of matrix. This is a great example of unusual fossil Sequoia cones.
