Name:
Celtis mccoshii (Hackberry)
Age: Eocene
Formation: Green River Formation
Location: Bonanza, Utah
Size: Leaf is 3.5" long including petiole
Here is a very unusual specimen. It is a large Celtis mccoshii, a hackberry, from the Green River Formation of Utah. This leaf has five distinct galls present on the leaf. These galls are due to disease or insect infestation. This parasitic condition is highly unusual in the fossil record. This lanceolate leaf exhibits wonderful detail. The strongly serrated margins are beautifully displayed, and the venation is clearly defined. The long, attenuate tip is intact, and the petiole is still tightly attached. The leaf has great color and contrast and is nicely centered on the natural, rectangular plate of shale. This is a very attractive, diseased leaf from the Eocene.
